Flash Flooding To Urban Oasis

Halff Associates: Laddie Place Phase III Regional Stormwater Facility Project

In the heart of “Flash-Flood Alley,” the East Woodlawn Ditch System (or Laddie Ditch)—consisting of open channels, under- ground storm-sewer systems, and street conveyance—runs along Fredericksburg Road through the fully urbanized area north of downtown San Antonio. In response to catastrophic flooding in 1998, the Bexar County Flood Control Program selected Halff Associates to design the Laddie Place Phase III Regional Stormwater Facility to mitigate excessive stormwater flooding. Additionally, the unique and innovative design of the facility created a new park, providing an urban oasis of recreational fields and walking trails for residents and youth sports leagues.
